The company behind the Kings Arms on Brentgovel Street entered creditors' voluntary liquidation on 29 July; Brendan Hogan of Cromwell & Co is liquidator.

The company that runs the Kings Arms, the pub at 23 Brentgovel Street in Bury St Edmunds town centre, has gone into liquidation. Bar Bar BSE Ltd resolved at a general meeting on 29 July 2026 “that the Company be wound-up voluntarily”, and the formal notices were published in The Gazette on 31 July. (The Gazette, resolutions for winding-up, notice 5183015)

Brendan P. Hogan of Cromwell & Co Insolvency Practitioners was appointed liquidator by the company’s members and creditors on the same day. (The Gazette, appointment of liquidators, notice 5183016)

What the notices record

The Gazette notice gives the company’s trading name as The Kings Arms and its nature of business as “public house”. Its principal trading address is 23 Brentgovel Street, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 1EB, and its registered office is at Godolphin House, 2 The Avenue, Newmarket. (The Gazette, notice 5183016)

The move had been signalled two weeks earlier: a notice published on 16 July called the company’s creditors to a virtual meeting at 1pm on 29 July to nominate a liquidator, with a general meeting of members held the same day to pass the winding-up resolution. (The Gazette, meetings of creditors, notice 5174592)

This is a creditors’ voluntary liquidation, the procedure a company’s own shareholders use to close it down when it cannot carry on because of its debts, rather than a compulsory winding-up ordered by a court.

Companies House shows Bar Bar BSE Ltd was incorporated on 10 May 2023, so the company closes after a little over three years running the pub. Its filing record carries two overdue markers: the last accounts on file cover the year to 31 May 2024, with the next set due by 28 February 2026, and a confirmation statement was due by 23 May 2026. (Companies House, company 14859657)

The notices do not say whether the pub itself is still open or what will happen to the premises. The pub’s own website at kingsarms-burystedmunds.co.uk was showing a registrar’s “domain registration has expired” notice when we checked on 12 August.

Whatever brought the company down, it was not the kitchen: the Food Standards Agency register records a food hygiene rating of 5, meaning “very good”, for The Kings Arms Tavern at 23 Brentgovel Street from a West Suffolk Council inspection on 30 March 2026. What it means for you

If the company owes you money, whether you are a supplier, a member of staff owed wages or a customer with an unused deposit or voucher for a booking, you are a creditor in the liquidation. The liquidator can be contacted at Cromwell & Co Insolvency Practitioners on 0800 061 4002 or info@cromwellinsolvency.co.uk. (The Gazette, notice 5183015)

If the Kings Arms is your local, the liquidation concerns the operating company rather than the building, and the notices do not state whether trading at 23 Brentgovel Street has stopped or whether another operator will take the pub on. We will report what happens to the premises when it appears on the public record. You can find the pub’s listing, and other pubs and food businesses across the town, in our Bury St Edmunds business directory, including the Kings Arms entry.
