The Bury St Edmunds Post is an independent news and information site for Bury St Edmunds and West Suffolk. We report what the public record shows and keep the information people look up accurate.
The district
West Suffolk Council was formed in 2019 out of Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury, which is why it covers ground with so little in common. Bury St Edmunds is the anchor, with its abbey ruins, its cathedral and the market that still runs in the centre. Newmarket is a racing town that faces Cambridge. Haverhill has grown mostly on Cambridge overspill. Mildenhall, Brandon, Lakenheath and Red Lodge sit on the Brecks in the north west, and Clare, Ixworth, Kedington, Great Barton, Barrow, Risby, Fornham and Exning are the villages. We write about them by name.
How we report
From documents, always cited. West Suffolk Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Lark, the Little Ouse and the Kennett, and company filings in The Gazette. Suffolk County Council runs roads, schools and social care, and we make clear which authority a decision belongs to. Where a record is unclear, we say it is unclear.
What happens in 2028
Unlike most districts, this one is not being carved up. It was confirmed in March 2026 that West Suffolk becomes the main component of a new Western Suffolk unitary authority, taking in most of Babergh and a number of Mid Suffolk parishes, with effect from 1 April 2028. Suffolk County Council began a judicial review of the reorganisation in June 2026. We will report what the published documents and court records say, and nothing beyond that.
