Last Christmas, buses replaced Bury to Cambridge trains from 27 December to 4 January. No trains run on Christmas Day. What is known so far for 2026.
Greater Anglia has not yet published its Christmas 2026 train plans for Bury St Edmunds. The engineering-works list on National Rail runs only to 19 December so far, with nothing yet for the Christmas week. What is certain is the pattern: no trains at all on Christmas Day, almost none on Boxing Day, and a Christmas Eve that ends early.
The quick answer
- No Greater Anglia trains run on Christmas Day, and on Boxing Day last year only a cut-down Stansted Express ran. Nothing called at Bury.
- Christmas Eve 2025: services cut back from 7pm and finished by 10pm.
- Last winter buses replaced Bury to Cambridge trains from 27 December to 4 January. Trains kept running between Ipswich and Bury, and on to Peterborough.
What happened last Christmas
Greater Anglia’s travel advice for Christmas 2025, published on 19 December 2025, set it out day by day:
| Day | Bury St Edmunds trains |
|---|---|
| Wednesday 24 December | Early shutdown: fewer trains from 7pm, all finished by 10pm |
| Thursday 25 December | No Greater Anglia services at all |
| Friday 26 December | Only a reduced Stansted Express, Tottenham Hale to Stansted. Nothing at Bury |
| Saturday 27 December to Sunday 4 January | Buses replace trains between Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge. Trains run between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough |
| Monday 5 January 2026 | Normal service |
The Cambridge closure came from Network Rail’s signalling renewal around Cambridge, needed for the new Cambridge South station. The year before, Greater Anglia’s Christmas 2024 advice also had rail replacement buses between Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge on New Year’s Eve, and no trains between Cambridge and Royston or Audley End from 25 December to 5 January.
Two Christmases running, then, the Bury to Cambridge leg has been a bus for at least part of the break. Whether that happens a third time depends on Network Rail’s 2026 plan, which is not published yet.
Already booked before Christmas
National Rail’s engineering works list shows these closures near Bury this autumn, all before the Christmas week:
- Sunday 25 October: buses replace trains between Cambridge or Cambridge North and Royston, Audley End and Stansted Airport (the notice). That hits anyone going on from Cambridge towards London.
- Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November: buses replace trains between Peterborough and Ely, Cambridge and Norwich (the notice). Worth checking if you change at Ely or head to Peterborough.
- Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November: amended late-night and early-morning trains between Ipswich and Norwich (the notice). This is the main line, not the Bury branch.
Driving and parking in town
In 2024 West Suffolk Council and Greene King ran a Christmas park and walk offer: 200 free spaces at the Greene King car park off Cullum Road every Saturday and Sunday from 30 November to 22 December, 8am to 5pm, plus about 300 free weekend spaces at Olding Road. EcoCarriers ran free pedicab rides from both into town. We could not find a 2025 version on the council’s site, and nothing has been announced for 2026 yet.
Our parking page has the everyday tariffs and free spots, and our roadworks page covers closures on the A14 and in town.
Still to be confirmed
- Greater Anglia’s Christmas 2026 timetable and Network Rail’s Christmas engineering work, usually announced in November and repeated in mid-December.
- Christmas Eve 2026 last trains from Bury St Edmunds.
- Any Christmas parking offer from West Suffolk Council.
