Two West Suffolk grant rounds close four days apart in September: up to £300 by 9am on 21 September, and £2,000 to £20,000 by noon on 25 September.

West Suffolk Council put out a reminder this week that its Go For It grants close soon. It did not mention that a much larger fund closes four days later (West Suffolk Council).

Both rounds are open now. Between them, and with a third route that runs all year, the amounts available run from £100 to £20,000. Here is the whole ladder, taken from the council’s own grants page.

West Suffolk community grant routes and what each is worth Four routes. Go For It grant up to 300 pounds, closing 9am on 21 September 2026. Locality budgets from 100 to 2,800 pounds, open all year. Go For It: up to £300, and the rules are unusually relaxed

This is seed funding for getting something started. The council says it has backed 24 projects since the scheme launched last summer, out of a pot of £10,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Applications close at 9am on Monday 21 September 2026.

What makes it worth knowing about is who can apply. Most grant schemes want a constituted organisation with its own bank account. This one does not (West Suffolk Council):

  • An informal group of at least three residents can apply. So can a formally constituted voluntary group.
  • There is no need for a dedicated bank account or a constitution. The council can pay the money into the organiser’s own account.
  • You do not have to be over 18. The council states that groups of young people can apply.
  • You do need to send a copy of a paying-in slip or the header of a bank statement to confirm the account.

The money can go on equipment, hire, venue hire, promotional materials or transport. The council asks for researched costs rather than round estimates.

The exclusions are where applications fail, so they are worth reading before you write anything. Go For It will not pay for:

  • anything that has already happened
  • activities that duplicate what the council already provides or commissions, unless demand cannot be met
  • social excursions outside West Suffolk
  • paid staff costs
  • any overseas activity
  • activities restricted to a group’s existing members
  • political or religious activities
  • general running costs not tied to the project

Thriving Communities: £2,000 to £20,000, closing 25 September

This is the bigger one, now in its third year, and it is the round the council’s press release did not mention. The deadline is 12pm on Friday 25 September 2026, four days after Go For It closes.

There are two tiers:

  • £2,000 to £8,000 for one-off projects serving a small part of the district, which the council describes as an estate or a village.
  • £8,001 to £20,000 for work covering the whole of West Suffolk or a large part of it, such as a town. The council keeps discretion to award less than is asked for.

The minimum you can apply for is £2,000. Applications are made on an editable PDF form emailed to thrivingcommunitiesfund@westsuffolk.gov.uk. There is a trap in the form itself: the council warns that it must be saved and sent with the supporting documents before you complete part two.

If your project needs less than £2,000, apply anyway. The council says applications to this fund below that figure are passed to the ward councillors for the area, to consider against their locality budgets instead. You do not have to work out which pot you belong in first.

A free online session on how to apply runs on Tuesday 8 September from 10am to 12.30pm over Microsoft Teams, with Jon Eaton from the council’s families and communities team. It is open only to organisations based in West Suffolk, or running activities for people inside the district boundary.

Locality budgets: the route that never closes

Individual West Suffolk councillors hold locality budgets of their own, awarding £100 to £2,800 to community groups for things the whole local community can use. There is no deadline, because there is no round. You approach your ward councillor directly.

The council also names the officers who help with this by area. North is covered by Lesley-Ann Keogh on 01638 719238 and Gemma O’Shea on 01284 757465. Central is Ellie McCarthy on 01284 757461 and Stephanie Edmans on 01284 757080. South is Jon Eaton on 01638 719235 and Chris Swarbrick on 01284 757216.

What it means for you

  • Two deadlines, four days apart, in the same month. 9am on Monday 21 September for Go For It. Noon on Friday 25 September for Thriving Communities. Neither is a working-hours cut-off you can leave to the afternoon.
  • A new group with no bank account is not shut out. Go For It was designed around exactly that, which makes it the realistic starting point for a group that formed this summer.
  • Do not self-select downwards. If you need £1,500, put it to Thriving Communities and let the council route it to your councillor, rather than assuming you are too small.
  • If you are anywhere near the £8,000 line, read the tiers first. The larger tier starts at £8,001 and is aimed at town-wide or district-wide work, so a village project asking £9,000 is being judged against a different test.
  • The 8 September webinar is free and is the cheapest hour you can spend on this. It covers eligibility and how decisions are made.
